Violent crime, hate speech or terrorism? How Canada views and prosecutes far-right extremism (2001–2019)

Fifty-six individuals were charged with terrorism between December 2001 when Canada first enacted its antiterrorism criminal offences and 2019. Not a single such individual was associated far-right group or espoused ideology. Over the same period of time, saw rise in violence crime, including several deadly attacks that raised spectre terrorism. This article seeks to identify why has not been activities those on far right, how prosecuted if for what implications are Canada’s prosecutions going forward. It finds since all publicly reported hate speech cases where an individual’s sentence aggravated have involved espousing rhetoric; likewise, but one case media no charge ensued can be described as being motivated by ideation. In result, Canadian law punishes more seriously Al-Qaida (AQ)-inspired extremism than extremism, while stigmatizing former latter. The time thus come tackle head-on concept ideology law, treats various ideologies.
